Know Before You Go

What Happens If You Fail?

A failed inspection isn't the end of the road. Here's exactly what happens for each type of failure and what your next step is.

Safety Defects

Brakes, tires, lights, steering, wipers, horn — anything that directly affects your ability to control or stop the vehicle. These are the most serious failures.

What happens: The vehicle cannot be legally driven until the defect is repaired. We can repair it here at Goldrive or you can take it to a shop of your choice — then bring it back for a free re-inspection within 30 days.

Equipment Violations

Cracked windshield, missing mirrors, broken seat belts, or other equipment that doesn't meet Hawaii state standards but isn't an immediate safety emergency.

What happens: You'll receive a written list of every failed item. Get the equipment repaired, then return to Goldrive for a free re-inspection within 30 days.

No Insurance / Insurance Not Current

Hawaii requires valid, current auto insurance to pass a safety inspection. If your policy has lapsed or you don't have proof of coverage, we cannot issue a certificate.

What happens: Contact your insurance provider to reinstate or update your policy. Once you have valid proof of insurance, come back and we'll complete the inspection — free re-inspection within 30 days.

Expired or Missing Registration

Your vehicle registration must be current to receive a safety inspection certificate. An expired or missing registration means we cannot complete the process.

What happens: You'll need to visit the DMV to renew or obtain your registration. The nearest office is Pukalani DMV — 91 Pukalani St, Makawao, HI 96768. Once registered, return within 30 days for a free re-inspection.

Free Re-Inspection Within 30 Days

No matter the reason for your failure — safety defect, equipment issue, insurance, or registration — once you've resolved it, bring your vehicle back to Goldrive within 30 days and we'll re-inspect it at no charge. After 30 days, a full new inspection fee applies.
